Weight adjustable dumbbells are very versatile. After all, with just a few weight adjustable dumbbells, you can accomplish practically all of the exercises that can be accomplished with multiple weight machines.
Of course, it is important that when you use any free weights that you are going through a proper range of motion. If you are just starting out, be sure to have a trainer or an experienced friend help you out -- have them watch you lift. Have them tell you what you can do better and which motions to be careful of. You most certainly do not want to get an injury.
If you are just starting out, you may want to start out by using weight machines before you move onto free weights.
Of course, weight adjustable dumbbells are so much cheaper than weight machines (the best kind of workout, however, would incorporate both free weights and weight machines).
